So today we started with "Graded Readers" (aka books) and Learner Journals (see photo below).
In the Learner Journals, everyone will be writing down what they got from today's lesson. I admit today was a mess. It was a mess because although there was a plan, it was NOT carried out because of all the new people who hadn't been studying with us over the last week.
But I think we can learn a lot from messes. What did we learn about today?
- The difference between "Have you heard of_________?" and "Do you know_______?" for people, food and places.
- How and when to ask "For how long?" and "Since when?"
- We learned that "since" can be followed by a subject + verb in the past simple
- We learned about ENGVID.COM and how that is the place for general questions
And there was more but for now I'll wait to see the learner journals for more detail. Let's hope there's lots there. What did you learn in class today?
If i want to use the question form "FOR HOW LONG" i've to use the present perfect continuens.
ReplyDeleteExpl. For how long have you been learning english?
But NEVER EVER use For how long time!!!!!!!!!!
Angelika
I`ve learned how to use "For" and "since" in answers; the differences between "have you heard of....?" and "do you know...?"
ReplyDeleteHow to say at anyone that one person is dead.
I have learned the difference between "Do you know..(a famous person)?", that means you actually met this person, and "Have you heard of...?", that means you know something about him/her, but you had never met him/her personally.
ReplyDeleteWe learned how we can make good questions in the past perfect continuous
ReplyDeletee.g. Had you heard of king Abdullah's late brother ?
Teflah
Yesterday we learned how to ask right quetions with "How long"/ "For how long"
ReplyDeleteex.:
A: Can you swim ?
B: Yes, i can.
A: For how long HAVE YOU BEEN SWIMMING ?(past perfect continous)
B: Since I'm 8./ For 10 years. (correct use of SINCE and FOR in the answers)
Also we learned some vocabulary, for dead people, the adjective "late" means somebody has died. e.g. "had you ever heard of king abdullas late brother?"
ReplyDeleteAnd this kind of question with "have you ever heard of..." You can use it with famous people, famous food, or famous place.
Yesterday I've learned the difference between since and for in answers for the Present Perf. Continuous. Since anwers the question "when?",instead, for answers the question "For how long?".
ReplyDeleteWe have also learned the correct use of 3 types of questions...
1)Do you know....?
2)Have you heard of....?
3)Have you ever heard of.....?
ex: A)Do you know Obama? B)Yes I know he.
You can't say that, cause you have never met Obama.
Between for and since.
ReplyDeletewe use a 'For' when we explain to how long.
ex)I've been Ireland for 8month.
we use a 'since' when we explain starting point or the action.
ex)I've been Ireland since February.
'pass away' is same meaning to die but this is more polite than die.
We learn about 'Present perfect continous'
ReplyDeleteeg)I've been driving for how long?
... for 10years, for 3hours... etc
I've been driving since when?
since..... we can use specific time.
... since i met her, since i was young, since 1990...etc
Becareful)
It's important to remember that NON-CONTINUOUS VERBS cannot be used in any continous tenses.
eg)I have been having my car for two years (X)
Because 'have' is posessions
I have had my car for two years.
